How Matchups Work

What you're looking at

One card per skill player (or QB) with a game this week, ranked against the defensive units — or the actual cornerbacks — they are about to face. Click a card to expand the breakdown. Cards sort by Matchup Score (best first). Filters opens the week's scoreboard — kickoff, spread and total, records, live and final scores — and picking a game narrows the board to that matchup (clear it with the × on the chip); the team menu and name search filter further. Game and team choices carry across the position tabs.

Where the ranks come from

Season-to-date PFF player grades, refreshed every morning after new games are graded. Early in the season each player's grade is weighted with their previous-season final grade in proportion to how little they have played, so one big game doesn't send a player to the top of a list; by midseason the current season carries most of the weight. Newcomers without a prior season lean on the positional average until they build a sample. Players on this week's injury report as Out or Doubtful are left off the board.

Team units are snap-weighted averages of the players in that unit (rank 1 of 32 = best). Player ranks compare everyone at the position with enough volume, counting last season toward that total: QBs need 20 dropbacks, RBs 10 carries, receivers 15 routes, corners 30 coverage snaps — otherwise "Unranked". Before a season's first graded week the board uses last season's final grades and says so.

Tabs

  • QB — the passer's supporting units vs the defense: WR / TE / RB receiving vs WR / TE / RB coverage, and OL pass block vs DL pass rush. "WR coverage" is the corners; "TE coverage" is linebackers + safeties; "RB coverage" is linebackers.
  • RB Rushing — run grade vs the defense's missed-tackle rate, yards after contact allowed per carry, and front-seven run defense. Proj Atts is the back's expected carries per game (this season's usage weighted with last season's).
  • RB Receiving — route-running grade vs linebacker coverage, defensive-back coverage, and team tackling. Proj Routes is expected routes per game.
  • WR — route-running grade vs the opponent's starting corners from the current depth chart (left, right, and slot), skipping anyone ruled out. Proj Snaps splits the receiver's expected routes per game across those corners from the receiver's slot/wide split and where each corner lines up, so the three add up to his full workload. The opponent rank in the card header is the whole defense's coverage grade.
  • TE — route-running grade vs linebacker, cornerback, and safety coverage.

Matchup Advantage and Score

Each row turns both ranks into a 0–100 percentile and takes the difference (offense minus defense). Five green pips = a big edge for the offense; three amber = roughly even; one or two red = the defense holds the edge. The card's Matchup Score is the average across its rows (weighted by projected snaps on the WR tab): GREAT, GOOD, EVEN, TOUGH, or BAD.

What it is not

Grades describe how well players have performed, not how often they'll be used — check game script, injuries, and the depth chart before acting on a matchup. Nothing here is betting advice.
